Wine & Jewish heritage

Mikulov used to be the intellectual, cultural and political centre of Moravian Jews. The Jewish settlement dates back to the 14th century. It was also the seat of the Moravian head rabbis.
We will start in the former Jewish quarter, where we will visit the Upper Synagogue, an original structure dating from 1550. We will also see several historic Jewish houses, a condominium, a former Jewish school for boys and the medieval mikveh.
We will take you to the Jewish cemetery dating back to the 15th century with 4000 gravestones which has become a destination of pilgrims from all over the world. A part of the cemetery is a ceremonial hall with an exhibition.
You will learn lots of interesting facts about the fascinating Jewish history of this region. We will also tell you a story of Rabbi Löw, the head Rabbi of Moravia who lived and worked in Mikulov for 20 years and who is supposed to have created the clay figure of the Golem.
The day also includes scenic drive and two winery visits, where you’ll tour the facilities, learn about the wine making process and taste the range of Moravia wines.
A lunch break will be right in the heart of the Jewish quarter in Mikulov in a cozy restaurant, owned by a famous Czech chef, who offers a traditional Jewish cuisine on his menu (lunch is not included in the price).
This is not a religious tour, but more historical with a concentration on Jewish history and culture. If you aren’t Jewish, you will still find it incredibly interesting.
